Quick answer

Somerville will present updated plans for rebuilding Broadway between Winchester and Central Streets at an open house on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Healey School, 5 Meacham Street. The City will share its preferred option for Magoun Square. All sidewalks would be rebuilt and the road repaved, with construction expected to begin in 2027.

If you live or own a home or business near Magoun Square, put this one on your calendar. The City will share updated plans for the Broadway reconstruction on November 4, 2026, including its preferred design for the Magoun Square intersection.

What's in the Broadway reconstruction project?

The work covers Broadway from Winchester Street to Central Street, plus about 20 feet into side streets for sidewalk work. The project page and the spring concept include:

  • Rebuilding all sidewalks and repaving the road curb to curb
  • Accessible curb ramps at existing crosswalks, plus raised and new crossings
  • Protected bike lanes in both directions
  • Curb extensions, and bus stops that are floating or moved
  • New trees and bigger tree wells
  • Better traffic signal timing, and possible traffic calming on nearby streets
  • Parking bays in new locations

The 3 Magoun Square options

This spring, the City showed three ideas for where Broadway meets Medford Street. It plans to name a preferred one on November 4.

OptionHow it works
RoundaboutNo traffic signals, one vehicle lane, shorter and raised crossings, a raised bike lane. The City says it has the least delay for drivers, cyclists and people walking.
"X"Mainly four approaches, a much shorter signal cycle, shorter crossings, more corner space and a walk-only signal phase.
"T"Splits the intersection into two parts, with a shorter cycle, shorter crossings, more corner space and more vehicle lanes and phases.

When does construction start?

  • Winter 2026-27: finalize the design
  • Spring 2027: publish the final design and prepare for construction
  • Construction: the City's announcement says 2027 to 2028. The project page says 2027 to 2029, depending on contractor schedules.

What to do if you own a home or storefront on Broadway

I'm a builder, not a traffic engineer, so I'll leave the roundabout debate to others. What I'd do is look at timing:

  • Ask about your frontage. At the open house, find your address on the plans. Check your curb, walkway, driveway apron, loading and the closest parking bay.
  • Ask about underground work. If you've been putting off a sewer line replacement or a new water or gas service, ask staff how it fits with the project schedule. Do this before new pavement and sidewalks go in.
  • Time your exterior work. Scaffolding, dumpsters and deliveries are harder during street work. Read my guide to Somerville construction hours and dumpster permits.
  • Business owners: ask how deliveries and customer access will work during construction, and get it in the record through the survey.
Builder's tip: Take photos of your sidewalk, steps and foundation along the street before heavy work starts nearby, with dates. If a question comes up later, you'll have a clear record of the condition before the work.

The bigger picture

This is one of the street projects that fit into the City's long-range spending. See my explainer on the FY2027 Capital Investment Plan for how Somerville is budgeting for streets and sidewalks.
