Walk-In Shower Cost in 2026: Tile vs Prefab, Glass and Curbless Options

Walk-in shower cost with installation in Somerville and Greater Boston: tile or prefab, glass doors, curbless showers and where each one fits.

Tiled walk-in shower with glass panel and niche
Quick answer

With Magno & Co, a walk-in shower replaced in the same spot usually lands in my mid-level renovation range of $12,000 to $18,000 for a typical Greater Boston bathroom. A full gut with a tiled shower and glass runs $19,000 to $30,000, and curbless showers or moving the drain push it past $30,000. Your exact price comes from a free walkthrough and a written line-item budget.

The walk-in shower cost my clients in Somerville, Cambridge and Medford typically pay depends on one big question: are we replacing the shower where it is, or changing the floor and layout to get there? Keep the footprint and it is usually a mid-level project. Go curbless or move plumbing and it climbs fast.

Below is how I price it with real Magno & Co ranges, what drives the number up or down, and the code points that matter for glass and size.

Walk-in shower cost with installation: where it sits in my price levels

These are what my clients typically pay with Magno & Co for a standard 5x8 to 8x10 bathroom in Greater Boston. They are my own pricing, not a statewide average.

LevelTypical priceHow a shower project fits
1. Bathroom refresh$5,000 – $12,000New shower trim and fixtures only. The existing shower walls and base stay.
2. Mid-level renovation$12,000 – $18,000The most common home for a walk-in shower: new tile walls or surround in the wet area, new valve, new floor tile, same layout.
3. Full renovation (gut to the studs)$19,000 – $30,000Everything down to studs and subfloor, full waterproofing, tiled shower with glass, new supply and drain lines where needed, permits and inspections.
Beyond a full renovation$30,000+Curbless showers, moving the drain or walls, enlarging the room, heated floors, high-end stone.

Larger rooms, layout changes, rot or structural repairs, lead-safe work in pre-1978 homes and high-end finishes all cost more. For an outside comparison, the 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Boston lists a midrange bathroom remodel at $27,681 and an upscale one at $84,165. My full breakdown of all four levels is in my bathroom renovation cost levels guide.

Tiled walk-in shower vs prefab base and panels

This is the biggest single choice in a shower remodel cost, tile or not.

  • Prefab base and panels: an acrylic or solid-surface base with matching wall panels. Fewer seams, faster install, less labor. The catch: bases come in set sizes, and old Somerville bathrooms rarely have square, standard walls.
  • Prefab base with tile walls: a good middle ground. The base handles the drain slope, and tile gives you the look you want on the walls.
  • Fully tiled shower: tile floor sloped to the drain, tile walls, built-in niche and bench if you want them. Most labor, most design freedom, and it fits any odd-sized space.

Tile layout matters too. Large-format tile, patterned layouts and natural stone take more cutting and more time than a simple running bond.

Glass doors and panels: safety glass is not optional

Glass is where a lot of budgets surprise people. A fixed panel costs less than a hinged door, and a frameless door with heavy glass costs more than a framed slider.

Whatever you choose, it must be safety glazing. Under section R308.4.5 of the 2021 International Residential Code, glass in walls or enclosures next to showers and tubs is a hazardous location when its bottom edge is less than 60 inches above the standing surface. Massachusetts adopted the 2021 IRC as the base of its tenth edition building code. That rule also catches a window inside or near the shower, which is common in older triple-deckers.

Curbless showers: why they cost more

A curbless (zero-threshold) shower looks clean and is easy to walk into. To build one, the shower floor has to drop below the bathroom floor so water still runs to the drain.

  • That often means recessing or reworking floor joists, which is structural work.
  • Many builds use a linear drain and a full waterproof membrane across a bigger area.
  • In 1900–1930 houses around Davis Square and Union Square, joists are often notched, sagging or undersized, so I open the floor before I promise a price.

That is why curbless sits in my beyond a full renovation level: $30,000+.

Waterproofing, valves and niches: the hidden half of the price

The parts you never see are the parts that protect your house.

  1. Waterproofing system: a sheet or liquid membrane over the walls and shower floor, done as one tested system. I flood-test the pan before tile goes down.
  2. Shower valve: a new anti-scald valve (pressure-balance or thermostatic). A thermostatic valve with separate volume control costs more but holds temperature better.
  3. Niches and benches: each niche needs framing, waterproofing at every corner, and careful tile cuts. Planning it between studs on an inside wall keeps it simple.
  4. Drain: keeping the drain in place saves money. Moving it means opening the floor and rerouting pipe.
Builder's tip: Ask any contractor to name the waterproofing system they will use and how they test it. If the answer is just "cement board and grout," keep shopping. Grout is not waterproof.

Size and code basics for a walk-in shower

Section P2708.1 of the 2021 IRC plumbing chapter sets a model minimum of 900 square inches of floor area and at least 30 inches in the smallest dimension. In Massachusetts, plumbing follows the state's own 248 CMR plumbing code, so a licensed plumber and your local plumbing inspector have the final say. Changing a valve or drain needs a plumbing permit; see do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Massachusetts.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a walk-in shower cost with installation?

With Magno & Co, replacing a shower in the same spot in a typical Greater Boston bathroom usually falls in my mid-level range of $12,000 to $18,000. A full gut with a tiled shower and glass runs $19,000 to $30,000.

Is a tiled shower more expensive than a prefab shower?

Usually yes, because tile takes more labor, a sloped mortar or foam base, and a full waterproofing system. Prefab bases and panels install faster but come in set sizes that may not fit older bathrooms.

Why does a curbless shower cost so much more?

The shower floor has to sit lower than the bathroom floor, which often means reworking joists, adding a linear drain and waterproofing a larger area. That is why I price curbless showers in my $30,000+ level.

Does a shower glass door have to be safety glass?

Yes. The 2021 IRC, which Massachusetts uses as the base of its residential code, treats glass next to showers and tubs as a hazardous location when its bottom edge is under 60 inches above the floor, so it must be safety glazing.
