EV charger installation rebate in Massachusetts: Level 2 charging at home in Somerville
EV charger installation rebate Massachusetts guide: Eversource and National Grid 2026 offers, Somerville permits, Level 2 costs and condo charging rights.

Eversource stopped taking 2026 EV charger rebate applications on November 1, 2026, and is waiting on state approval of a 2027 program. National Grid's 2026 programs run through December 10, 2026 (November 30 for Turnkey), with work and application both complete by then. They pay up to $700 toward the wiring for a home Level 2 charger for standard single-family customers, with more for discount-rate customers, environmental justice areas and 2 to 4 unit buildings. Off-peak charging enrollment is required, and both utilities say incentives are expected to change for 2027.
If you are looking for an EV charger installation rebate in Massachusetts, your electric utility is the place to start. Eversource closed 2026 applications on November 1, 2026 and is awaiting state approval of a 2027 program. National Grid pays up to $700 toward the wiring for a home Level 2 charger for standard single-family customers through December 10, 2026 (November 30 for its Turnkey program), and more for income-eligible customers and small multi-family buildings.
Below I break down both programs as their pages read on November 2, 2026, plus permits and what to know if you live in a triple-decker or condo.
EV charger installation rebate in Massachusetts: Eversource
Eversource serves Somerville, as the City's Community Choice Electricity site notes. Its home charging rebate page says the program stopped taking 2026 applications on November 1, 2026. Here is what the 2026 program offered:
| Customer | Single household | Shared charger, 2 to 4 units |
|---|---|---|
| Standard rate | Up to $700 for wiring or panel upgrades | Up to $1,400 |
| Environmental justice community | Up to $1,000 | Up to $2,000 |
| Discount Rate | Up to $1,700 for upgrades and the charger | Up to $2,700 |
- The charger had to be a Wi-Fi compatible Level 2 smart charger, 80 amps or less, on Eversource's Qualified Product List.
- Managed Charging enrollment was required. Rebates couldn't exceed what you paid.
- Eversource says it is awaiting state approval of a 2027 program, with changes expected. If you install after November 1, 2026, you may be able to apply only if a program is available in 2027.
National Grid's EV charging programs
National Grid's EV Charging Upgrade Program pays up to $700 for single-family home wiring for a 240-volt outlet, with more for 2 to 4 unit buildings.
- You must enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program on the same electric account. National Grid estimates about $100 a year in rebates from it.
- Customers on the Discount Rate (R-2) can get an extra rebate for a qualified charger.
- The page says to complete work and apply by December 10, 2026, and that incentives are expected to change in 2027.
For environmental justice areas and R-2 customers, the Turnkey program applies the incentive up front: up to $1,000 for wiring in a single-family home and up to $2,000 in a 2 to 4 unit home, plus up to $700 for a charger for R-2 customers. Its deadline is November 30, 2026.
What a Level 2 install costs
Angi's 2026 data puts the national average to install a home EV charger at $967, with most people paying $554 to $1,379. A Level 2 setup with the charger runs $700 to over $2,000. Greater Boston usually runs higher. What drives it:
- Distance from the panel to the parking spot. In a triple-decker, the panel is often in the basement and the car is out back or in the driveway.
- Panel capacity. If there's no room, you may need a bigger service first, especially if a heat pump is coming too (see my heat pump guide).
- Trenching or outdoor runs to a detached garage or parking pad.
- Wall and trim repair after fishing cable through old plaster.
Permits in Somerville
A Level 2 charger is electrical work, and in Somerville a licensed electrician must apply for and obtain all electrical permits, per the ISD Building Division FAQ. Homeowners can't pull these themselves. If the job includes trenching, a new post or other building work, I check whether a building permit is needed too. My Somerville building permit guide covers the process.
Triple-deckers, condos and rentals
- 2 to 4 unit buildings got higher caps for shared chargers under both utilities' 2026 programs.
- National Grid exempts tenants or landlords of 2 to 4 unit buildings with shared parking, or who don't own or lease an EV, from the managed charging requirement. Landlords who pay for the work when a tenant holds the account use a Third Party Payee form.
- Condos: under M.G.L. c. 183A, s. 10A, an association can't prohibit or unreasonably restrict an owner from installing a charger. The owner pays, a licensed electrician or contractor does the work, and an application not denied in writing within 60 days is deemed approved. Owners must disclose the charger to future buyers.
Condo work has other rules too. See my condo renovation rules guide.
