Quick answer

Somerville will hold a community forum on the new school at 115 Sycamore Street on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Somerville High School Highlander Forum, 81 Highland Avenue. The preferred option is designed for up to 925 students on the former Winter Hill school site. The City says the state would cover about half the cost of the building.

The site of the old Winter Hill school is moving closer to having a new building. The City [has scheduled a community forum](https://www.somervillema.gov/news/community-forum-115-sycamore-street-new-school-building-project-november-10) so people can hear the plan and ask questions before the design gets more detailed.

## When and where is the forum?

- **When:** Tuesday, November 10, 2026, 6 to 8 p.m.
- **Where:** Somerville High School, Highlander Forum, 81 Highland Avenue
- **Who presents:** Mayor Wilson, Superintendent Carmona and the architects, Perkins Eastman
- **Format:** presentations, followed by questions and discussion

The City's GovTV team will record it for [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/SomervilleCityTV). Interpreter requests should go to languageaccess@somervillema.gov or 311 at least 7 days ahead.

## What's in the preferred design?

The City [picked its preferred option](https://www.somervillema.gov/news/somerville-selects-preferred-design-option-new-school-building-115-sycamore-street) and submitted it to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). Here's what it has said so far:

| Item | What the City has said |
| --- | --- |
| **Size** | Up to 925 students |
| **Site** | 115 Sycamore Street, the former Winter Hill Community Innovation School, closed in 2023 |
| **Layout** | Grade-level clusters, to create smaller communities inside the school |
| **Outdoors** | The schoolyard stays where it is, plus a "rooftop" play space reached at street level from Evergreen and Sycamore Streets |
| **Community use** | Easy access to the gym and cafetorium outside school hours |
| **Who moves in** | Students from the Benjamin Brown School on Willow Avenue, after it opens, and added capacity across the district |

The City's announcements I read don't give a total project cost, the City's share or an opening date. **That's the first thing I'd ask about.** One note on size: [minutes from an August School Committee meeting](https://s3.amazonaws.com/somervillema-live/s3fs-public/2026-09/Special%20meeting%208-17-26%20Minutes%20.pdf) show that 925 is the building's capacity, not necessarily how many students would enroll. They also show the debate over a smaller option of about 600 to 690 seats, which the committees did not choose.

## How the state funding works

The City has been in the MSBA process since 2023 and says the state would cover **about half the cost** of the new building. The MSBA board still has to vote to move the project to the next phase, called schematic design. That's when a general concept becomes a much more detailed plan, which is why the City wants feedback now.

## Questions a builder would ask at the forum

Schematic design is when changes are still fairly cheap. If you live nearby, I'd ask:

- What are the total cost and the City's share, and what happens to the budget if construction prices rise?
- Where will trucks go, and where will the contractor store materials and park?
- What hours will work be allowed, and who do neighbors call with a problem?
- Will existing homes nearby get a condition survey before excavation begins?
- How is the building being sized for the students of the future, and how will it be maintained?
- How will the design handle stormwater and traffic at drop-off?

**Builder's tip:** Living next to a big job? Photograph your foundation, chimney and any existing cracks with dates before site work begins. Good records make any later conversation far easier.
